REEL LADIES FEATURES WRITER/DIRECTOR SUE KRAMER
Sue Kramer has been writing professionally in Hollywood for 12 years, working with everybody from Sissy Spacek to Julia Roberts, trying to get script to screen. The Goldbergs and the Romanos, purchased by no less than three different studios, is considered to be a favorite on many “Best Hollywood Scripts Never Made” lists. She made her directorial debut with the 2006 hit, Gray Matters, starring Heather Graham. Read below her interview with REEL Ladies as she talks about her current project, YOU VOTE.
The Creative Coalition’s “YouVote”video launched on October 7 on YouTube at http://www.thecreativecoalition.org/events/youvotevideo.htm. Conceived and directed by filmmaker Sue Kramer, “YouVote” leverages the spotlight of the entertainment industry to inspire and encourage Americans to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
“For too long the entertainment community has been accused of being either indifferent to important issues or lending their voices only to certain pet causes. This video demonstrates that Hollywood understands voting is not about liberal or conservative, it’s about participating in the democratic process and being a proud American,” said Sue Kramer, director of the “YouVote” video.

About The Creative Coalition (www.thecreativecoalition.org).
RL: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE YOUVOTE CAMPAIGN AND THE CREATIVE COALITION.
SK: The Creative Coalition is a non-for-profit arts advocacy group that fights for causes related to artists and first amendment rights. It was started over 15 years ago by Christopher Reeve and Susan Sarandon among others. The members are actors, writers, directors and producers in the entertainment community and it is run today by executive director Robin Bronk. The You Vote campaign was an idea that I came up with to unite the country and use their right to vote. The Creative Coalition being an advocacy group was the perfect coordinating body to help me make the video. They are a coalition whichis exactly what the video is made up of, a coalition of entertainment professionals wanting to use their voices and faces to jumpstart the non-voters in this country.
RL: HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME TO YOU?
SK: I was fortunate enough to be a co-chair at the DNC and the RNC for the Creative Coalition and after leaving the DNC I felt united as a country. Subsequently after leaving the RNC, I felt the country was completely divided because of the use of rhetoric the speakers at the RNC chose to use. I strongly wanted to do something as an artist and as someone who is part of the the Hollywood community to communicate to the country and its citizen’s–that “we” the entertainment community care about the over all better good of this country and contrary to belief, do care about non partisan causes such as the “right to vote”.
RL: HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO COMPLETE IT?
SK: From inception to the finished product, it took 4 weeks.
RL: YOU GUYS GOT SOME GREAT NAMES ATTACHED TO THIS PROJECT, HOW DID YOU MANAGE THAT?
SK: It’s called symbiotic unification. The Creative Coalition, myself, my producers and our friends asked friends to help out who then asked their friends and so on and so on…
RL: WHERE CAN AUDIENCES VIEW IT?
SK: Many places. Firstly, http://www.youvotevideo.org. Also on http://www.youtube.com and type in “you vote video”–we also just made an exclusive deal with Verizon that Vcast subscribers can see the video on their phones and on FIOS as a PSA.
RL: AS PART OF THE VIDEO, A NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS RECITE THE FOLLOWING MARGARET MEAD QUOTE: “NEVER DOUBT THAT A SMALL GROUP OF THOUGHTFUL, COMMITTED CITIZENS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. INDEED, IT’S THE ONLY THAT EVER HAS.“ TELL US WHAT THAT QUOTE MEANS TO YOU.
SK: The quote is one of my all time favorite quotes and has hung in my office for over ten years. It’s my motto and a motto I think that can be used and never underestimated.
RL: WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN LIKE?
SK: Phenomenal. Truly. It has been one of the most rewarding experience of my professional career.
RL: WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
SK: I am deciding on a feature to direct this spring or summer and just sold a game show pilot to Merv Griffin Entertainment.
RL: SO ARE YOU GOING TO TELL US…WHO ARE YOU VOTING FOR?? 🙂
SK: Well, that defeats my video because it’s not about who, even though of course I would love to scream–“Vote for him!!” It’s about—I will use my right and privilege to vote and will never take that right for granted.
RL: ANY LAST MESSAGE FOR AUDIENCE?
SK: Whoever you are, whatever you do, seize the moment and be part of history. VOTE!
